Presentation: “Underwater Motion Picture and Video Production: Adventures and Evolutions” |
||
|
This presentation will examine the trials, tribulations, adventures -- and technical and aesthetic challenges encountered in Chuck Davis' nearly 30-year career as a freelance underwater cinematographer and still photographer. Davis will show chronological examples and production stills of highlights of his work from early beginnings in the 70's doing inspection and documentary work for the marine transportation and oil industry in the Gulf of Mexico and off the California Coast, to assignments in television, special effects, advertising, IMAX productions and work for conservation-based TV series such as the Cousteau Society's "Rediscovery of the World" programs and Jean-Michel Cousteau's award-winning "Ocean Adventures" PBS series. This presentation will also include examples of Davis's more experimental work, such as filming sea trials of inventor, Graham Hawkes' revolutionary winged-submersibles, "Deep Flight" and "Deep Aviator." Davis will also address the evolution that has taken place in image gathering underwater, from early work in 16mm using his trusty "Rebikoff M123" integral camera with its "Ivanoff" corrector, to more advanced 35mm and 65mm motion picture cameras and housings as well as current digital acquisition in High Definition video and even "super HD" using the very new "Red One" video camera. This presentation will examine some of the changes/innovations that have occurred over the years in underwater lighting systems from cable supplied tungsten AC lamps to portable, battery-supplied HMI units. Davis will also take a brief look at innovations in life support gear for filmmakers such as the AP Valves' mixed=gas, closed-circuit "Inspiration" rebreather which has opened new horizons for underwater wildlife and natural history filming. |
