Presenting A. L. “SCRAP” LUNDY

A. L.

Presentation: “The Divers Who Made Cannery Row the Sardine Capital of the World

Scrap Lundy’s involvement with diving began in a rock quarry in Iowa in the mid 1950’s. Following his graduation from Marquette University in 1961, he was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy, eventually becoming qualified as an Explosive Ordinance Disposal expert and a Second Class Diver. He took his expertise back to the civilian world when, in 1966, he joined the underwater division of Reading and Bates Offshore Drilling Co., and later CAL-Dive, Inc. In 1969 he left the diving industry and went in the investment business, a career which he has pursued down to the present day. His involvement in diving has never ceased, however, as he remains an avid sport and technical diver. Mr. Lundy is a founding member and former Director of the Historical Diving Society USA and is a serious student of the history of diving. His highly regarded book, The California Abalone Industry: A Pictorial History, is a seminal study of this important fishery and has made an important contribution to the written history of California. As a by-product of his love for the history of the Monterey area, Mr. Lundy takes an active role in the Cannery Row preservation group and will soon be publishing a new volume on the lives of the actual people John Steinbeck modeled his characters upon.
