Dear fellow divers,

The Society will hold its annual Conference at The Monterey Maritime and History Museum, Monterey, California, on Saturday, April 19, 2008. It will be held in conjunction with the ADCI Western Chapter Conference. Those of you who attended the 2006 HDS Seattle Conference/ Western Chapter meeting will recall how successful that event was for both organizations.

The HDS weekend program begins with a joint ADCI/HDS "Meet and Greet" on Friday evening, is followed by a full Saturday conference, the HDS Annual Awards Banquet on Saturday evening, and a local diving history program on Sunday morning.

Full details are at www.hds.org. Click on Recent Announcements.

Please note than one of the speakers is Chris Swann, whose new book, The History of Oilfield Diving, is garnering accolades from around the world. You can check out ADCI Hall of Fame member Torrance Parker's review of the book on the website in New Products. Other author's on the program are Scrap Lundy who wrote The California Abalone Industry, and Tom Kendrick, whose history of the California urchin diving industry was published under the title of Blue Water Gold Rush.

There will displays of antique commercial diving equipment plus some examples of the first helium demand helmets developed in Santa Barbara in the 1960s. A short presentation by Fred Johnson on the recently re-launched Chino State prison program is included in the Conference presentations, plus other non published presentations.

The Saturday evening Awards Banquet will honor Bev Morgan who will receive the HDS Hans Hass Diving To Adventure Award. Among others confirmed to date as attending are ADCI Hall of Fame members Jim Caldwell, Fred Aichele, Bob Kirby, and a rare appearance by Oceaneering co-founder Lad Handelman. The HDS Awards banquet auction will include an authentic traditional deep sea copper and brass diving helmet, a new Limited Edition Classic Squawk Box diver's radio from Carrillo Underwater Services, a new diving dress of your choice from K.M.E. Diving Suits, and other items.

Tickets to both the Conference ($40) and the Awards banquet ($57) are limited. Both sold out at the 2006 Seattle event. Please book your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

The Conference is a considerable financial undertaking for the Society, and as in Seattle, it can only function on the generosity of our industry sponsors. The Sponsor levels are printed below.
