Sid Macken |
| Sid Macken brings over 50 years of diving experience to the HDS Board of directors. He started diving in the streams and ponds near his rural Oregon home at age ten and took his first formal SCUBA training in 1960. He graduated from Santa Barbara City College's Marine Diving Technology Program in 1971. Sid has pursued a lifelong interest in underwater photography and now specializes in underwater videography. His video work has appeared on local news channels, Oregon Public Broadcasting, Discovery Channel, The Food Network and Sesame Street. He has produced documentaries on diving history and coastal ecology. Sid also provides video support for training of U. S. Marines at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. |
Between 1986 and 2004, Sid served as a public safety diver for two sheriff departments and a fire department. He earned the rating of Public Safety Diver, Dive Rescue Technician, Swiftwater Rescue Technician and Public Safety Scuba Instructor. Sid maintains his commercial diving certification through the Association of Diving Contractors, International and works as a hyperbaric chamber operator for Compressed Air Medical Services of Portland, Oregon. |
In 1993, a Santa Barbara City College classmate introduced Sid to the Historical Diving Society USA. He subsequently joined the Society and became active in its activities. He has produced several documentary videos for the Society, and authors articles on the history of underwater photography for The Journal of Diving History. His articles have also appeared in the ADCI magazine, Underwater. Sid uses speaking engagements to promote the Society and diving history in the Northwest. |
